Random Thoughts of May

So May has been and nearly gone again. I've been so slack about posting I nearly forgot all together about writing something new this month. I've been busy tromping around the house and gearing up for the deck building projects and the other odds and ends and I just haven't had time.

There's nothing really new to report here. I've sworn off the purchase of the rifles and rifle-related stuff in order to try to eliminate our debts and come to grips with what will surely be $4.50 to $5.00 per gallon gas. I think we'll make it but it will be a lot more like we lived in college and a lot less like we lived even 3 years ago. I am concerned for others not as fortunate as the wife and I are and am trying to thing of a way to help.

I find that once allowed to stop obsessing about the construction and pursuit of the ultimate squirrelly rifle, my mind starts to wander back to planing my outings afield and I begin to reminisce about the different spots where I have had the best days and what they were like. I wish season were open already. I could use the quiet focus of a morning stalking anything or just listening to the wind sing in the big pines at Tranquility.

My digital ACU Marpat ALICE pack finally arrived. I am pretty stoked about finally finding what I was after without knowing what it was to begin with. I can't wait to get straps threaded up and get some field time on it. I think mud will probably look nice rubbed into it.... ;-)

I went and priced a few hard cases for the Ruger twins and, damn it, those thing are expensive. I went poking around in the garage a rustled up enough left-over stuff to build something fit to ride in the back of my car that is rigid enough to hold things off the scopes. I ordered some foam to pad the insides. We'll see how it does. Either way, I get to build it and that should make it more fun.

The way I figure it we have about one hundred days until season opens on the squirrel population here in Ohio. I am going to need to get to the range at least a couple of more times to make sure things are as they should be and that I can still hit what I aim at. I am excited and nervous. Age has this way of robbing things like reflexes and motor skills. I need to work harder to not be as good as I used to be without ever seriously practicing. Life's a bitch, then you need Viagra and Lipitor.
